General Purpose:  The Marcia Brady Tucker Curatorial Fellowship is designed to provide curatorial experience for an emerging scholar of American decorative arts who is considering the museum profession. The Fellow will be fully integrated into the Department of American Decorative Arts and work under the direction of the curator and associate curator. Duties will include: Assisting in the daily functions of the department, including collection and acquisitions research, participation in public programming, and collections maintenance; participation in implementing the installation of an exhibition on Rhode Island furniture of the colonial and early Federal periods, including writing interpretive materials and working on media presentations of fabrication techniques; assisting with rotations in the permanent collection galleries; working with the department to prepare the American Decorative Arts section of the Yale University Art Gallery Bulletin, an annual publication highlighting recent acquisitions; interacting with the public, visiting scholars, and students to exchange information on the collection; answer scholarly inquiries and general correspondence.

Required Education and Experience:  M.A. in Art History or related field.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in 17th and 18th-century American furniture.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle original works of art with care, with a commitment to object-based research and teaching.
  • Excellent scholarly writing and research skills with the ability to juggle multiple tasks and meet demanding deadlines.
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate with museum staff and public in a knowledgeable and professional manner.
  • Self-directed with the ability to take initiative, anticipate actions needed, solve problems and exercise discretion and independent judgment. Ability to be a team player in an active and diverse office environment; excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Preferred:  Museum and/or object-based teaching experience; M.A. in Design History or American Studies.
