The position is the primary person responsible for the presentation, loan, and development of the museum’s collection of contemporary art, comprising approximately 6,000 works dating from 1945 to the present. The position organizes/co-organizes original collection- and loan-based temporary exhibitions, including major traveling exhibitions; develops and contributes to CMOA’s Forum Gallery program; identifies borrowed exhibitions for presentation at the museum; oversees gallery rotations of the permanent collection; conducts research, interprets art works, and creates visitor-centered experiences for the museum’s audiences; expands the contemporary art collection through gifts and purchases; evaluates and assesses the collection as part of an overall collections plan, including deaccessioning; supports the curatorial team, for the Carnegie International North America’s premier ongoing international survey of contemporary art founded at the behest of Andrew Carnegie in 1896.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The position requires a Master’s Degree or PhD in art history or other relevant field, along with at least five years of progressively responsible curatorial experience in an accredited art museum. The candidate must have a track record of organizing significant exhibitions on and publications of contemporary art.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge about the field of contemporary art, including familiarity with artists and professional counterparts, nationally and internationally, is essential. Must be able to work collaboratively and supervise and motivate others in a team-oriented environment. Strong organizational and written/oral communication skills are essential. Experience with collaborative, cross-departmental, visitor-centered strategies for engaging audiences with contemporary art is highly desirable. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office; Internet; personal computer, and scanner. The employee will be expected to gain familiarity with KEmu, the museum’s collection’s management system.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is primarily sedentary in nature. Candidate must be able to lift 25 pounds, bend, stand, and navigate spaces for installations, as necessary; to travel nationally and internationally; to be available on weekends and evenings, as necessary.
