General Job Description
The Education Program Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, promotion and evaluation of education programming for children and adults at the Albany Heritage Area Visitors Center.  The Visitors Center is comprised of a tourist information center, a City of Albany history gallery, rotating exhibit space and the Henry Hudson Planetarium.  Education programs interpret the heritage of Albany in terms of history, environment and culture, and teach the science of astronomy.

Areas of Responsibility

Public Programs

  • Develop a series of education programs for adults and families such as tours, presentations and hands-on activities that explore local history and culture, and astronomy
  • Work to enhance the theme and goals of the Albany Heritage Area
  • Work with Director of Operations to develop complimentary exhibits and programs

School Group Program

  • Develop education programs that meet NYS learning standards for students of all ages, but predominantly pre-school through 6th grade, and which are in alignment with the Albany Heritage Area goals and objectives
  • Maintain current group bookings  through outreach and new curriculum based offerings (2014 – 7,000 students)
  • Develop pre and post-visit materials
  • Teach programs utilizing interactive learning activities
  • Schedule school programs utilizing a Customer Relations Management (CRM) program
  • Maintain and develop new community relationships, including collaborative programming with other cultural organizations
  • Maintain and develop new relationships with educators and educational institutions
  • Recruit, train and schedule volunteer educators
  • Monitor program effectiveness by soliciting feedback through evaluation forms, observation and school group needs, applying feedback for the constant improvement of programs
  • Stay abreast of curriculum standards
  • Assist Director of Operations in researching grant resources, the development of grant proposals and monitoring grant projects as appropriate

Visitor Services

  • Assist with supervision of reception desk staff
  • Staff the reception desk as needed
  • Assist with gift shop transactions as needed

All ACCVB staff members may be called upon at any time, as a member of the team, to work in other areas or take on additional responsibilities when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Background in education in a classroom setting or as a museum educator
  • Ability to teach and interact with various age levels from pre-school through adult
  • Excellent written, verbal and listening communication skills
  • Technology proficient
  • Self-motivated and directed, energetic, creative and flexible
  • Passionate about teaching

Start Date:  Mid – May 2015

Salary Range:  $30 – 37,000
