Position Description: Reporting to the V.P. of Education and Programs, the Manager of Public Programs develops, plans, and implements adult public programs at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), including lectures, symposia, cinema screenings, performances, workshops, in-gallery artist-centric programs, and special projects.

The Manager of Public Programs is responsible for establishing an innovative program schedule that reflects and builds on MAD’s unique identity as a museum that celebrates the creative process through which materials are crafted into works that enhance contemporary life. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a deep knowledge of contemporary art, design, and culture, as well as familiarity with emerging and established practitioners across a variety of disciplines.



Responsibilities Include:

– Developing and planning a robust and diverse roster of programs that foster engagement with MAD members and other established adult audiences while developing connections with new audiences to the Museum.

– Building public engagement through both traditional and innovative programs that connect the Museum and its activities to the culture at large and offering participants the opportunity to learn through a variety of avenues from participatory and experiential to academic and scholarly activities.

– Identify trends in contemporary culture, focusing on art, craft, and design, and create a dynamic forum to explore these developments

– Organize both large and small-scale programs for a variety of adult audiences that include both specialized art and design communities as well as the general museum-going public.

– Collaborate and support artists, designers and makers through traditional and interdisciplinary practices.

– Oversee all aspects of program planning, administration, and implementation, including program budgeting and supervising program staff and interns.

Job Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree required, MA preferred; 3-5 years of experience producing public programs in a museum or cultural setting; deep knowledge of contemporary developments in the arts, design, performance, and cinema communities; demonstrated creativity in developing new models for programs and visitor engagement; strong research, writing, and communication skills; flexible and collaborative personality; experienced in public speaking; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; supervisory experience; budgeting, billing and record keeping experience; computer and database experience.
