POSITION SUMMARY
Curatorial Fellow assists the Curator to develop, execute, and manage exhibitions presented at or on behalf of Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC), a dynamic institution dedicated to presenting innovative exhibitions in the field of craft. The Curatorial Fellow works collaboratively with other members of the small curatorial team and organization’s staff to design and implement public programs that support the mission and goals of HCCC.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Researches, curates, and implements five exhibitions each year for the Artist Hall, an alternative exhibit space focused on presenting emerging and/or regional talent.
  • Produces research for upcoming exhibitions and develops content for exhibition didactic materials, including labels, gallery guides, text panels, and/or catalogues as needed. Provides information about exhibitions for use in print, electronic media, and press releases.
  • Assists Curator and curatorial staff with coordination and installation of exhibits, designing lay out, lighting, gallery preparation, art handling, crating and shipping.
  • Assists Curator with administrative duties in regard to HCCC’s exhibitions committee and organizes documents for committee meetings.
  • Coordinates with Programs Assistant to gather and document exhibition information, including

photographic documentation of objects and installations, condition reports, contracts, checklists and correspondence with artists, galleries and organizations as appropriate.

  • Acts as a tour guide for exhibitions, gallery attendant, and assists with docent orientations as needed.
  • Works with all staff to create and execute public and educational programming advancing the mission of HCCC.
  • Actively represents HCCC with stakeholders and potential supporters and the local and national artistic and curatorial communities.
  • Other administrative or general duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Curator.

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate is a creative thinker who is organized and able to manage multiple short- and long-term projects, is committed to working in a fast-paced environment, and is excited to support the artistic vision of the institution.

  • Masters degree in design history, art history, arts administration, craft or curatorial/museum studies is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft products, database management, and social media.
  • Willing to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings as needed. (Required work schedule is Tuesday – Saturday).
