American Curatorial Assistant

Description:

The Worcester Art Museum seeks a skilled Curatorial Assistant to participate in programming related to the Museum’s American collections, which range from Colonial and Federal painting and decorative arts through mid twentieth-century photography and prints. This is a one year full-time, limited term position supported by The Henry Luce Foundation.

Guided by the Museum’s global perspective, vision statement, and strategic plan, the incumbent will aid in the reinstallation of the American collections and will contribute to the development and execution of exhibitions, publications, and programs meant to increase WAM’s audiences for American art and to create meaningful connections across departments and media. Under the direction of the Assistant Curator of American Art, the Curatorial Assistant will undertake tasks related to collections, including object research; coordination with the Registrars’ department in the care and display of objects; and collaboration with Audience Engagement on didactics, promotional materials, and public programming. The incumbent will also act as a liaison with collectors, lenders, and staff and will provide clerical and logistical support in the preparation of checklists, loan requests, and other materials. This position may offer opportunities for public speaking and original research and writing.

 

Qualifications:

Successful candidate will possess a B.A. in art history, American Studies, or related field, M.A. preferred; at least 2 years of museum experience, preferably collections-based; strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and collections management systems; excellent organizational ability and attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills and diplomatic manner; strong writing and research skills; ability to handle several projects simultaneously.
