This position serves as the Director of the National Naval Aviation Museum (NNAM) in Pensacola, Florida, under the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC). The mission of NNAM is to preserve and enhance the relevance, heritage, and image of Naval Aviation through acquisition, collection, preservation, and exhibiting articles of significance relating to the history and mission of Naval Aviation. In addition to presenting the historical aspects of Naval Aviation, the museum is responsible for the representation of the Naval Aviation community as a whole to the American people, Navy family, and visiting public, as well as for present and future potential members of its community. The Director also serves as the Navy representative to both the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation (NAMF), a non-profit, non-federal entity chartered to provide charitable support to the NNAM; and the National Flight Academy (NFA), a limited liability corporation chartered to support the NAMF and NNAM.

Job Requirements

DUTIES:

  • Oversee the operation of the largest and most visited museum within the Navy museum system.
  • Manage the four cornerstones of a public museum: research, collection, exhibits, and education. Outreach includes broadcasting the naval aviation story through a variety of promotional venues.  This includes the museum’s aircraft loan program, approved event participation and active liaison with the naval aviation community.
  • Oversees and leads a highly diverse and complex work force of federal employees, volunteers and gratuitous service persponnel in meeting NHHC and NNAM mission objectives.
  • Oversee the growth, care, loan, display and security of a collection of over 1,000 aircraft, and over 34,000 additional artifacts, as well as 3,200 linear feet of archival materials.
  • Oversee the acquisition of historic aircraft and other objects, materials and services, including making recommendations for the aircraft trade program.
  • Represents NHHC and the naval aviation community to the general public, military constituents and various other entities that are supporters of or stakeholders to the museum.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

1) Analyzing and evaluating program data to determine the effectiveness of museum or equivalent organizations operations and to identify areas for improvement;
2) organizing and leading others in comprehensive studies or projects and preparing accurate, technically sound recommendations;
3) managing, maintaining and preserving acquired items, such as equipment, material and collections, that are associated with a modern museum;
4) apply concepts of a modern museum’s mission by utilizing knowledge of the role of naval aviation within the context of Navy operations;
5) communicating program objectives to key high-level officials and project officers in support and defense of mission critical museum initiatives, objectives and activities;
6) utilizing knowledge of standards and best practices for museums, non-profits, or similar organizations to provide vision and strategic direction.

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Generally, current Federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level.
