Job Description

Set within a twenty-five acre site three miles from downtown Tulsa, Philbrook’s main campus is a unique combination of historic house, modern museum complex, and beautifully gardened property. In 2013, the Museum expanded with the opening of Philbrook Downtown – a 30,000 sq. ft. satellite facility located in the heart of Tulsa’s vibrant Brady Arts District.

Distinguished by nationally recognized collections, facilities, and gardens, it is the premier cultural institution in the city of Tulsa and a statewide leader in the cultural life of Oklahoma.

Job Description

With a department staff of five, the Director of Collections and Exhibitions is responsible for managing the physical control and ongoing care of the Museum’s permanent collection, the logistics of a vibrant exhibitions program, the administration of budgets, and general oversight ensuring that departmental goals support the Museum’s culture of growth, inclusivity and collaboration.

The Museum’s permanent collection is comprised of approximately 12,000 individual works of art and offers visitors a broad view of the major art movements in Western civilization, as well as superb examples of non-Western cultural traditions including those of Asia and Africa. In addition, the permanent collection boasts particular strength in Renaissance and Baroque painting, art of the American Southwest, modern and contemporary art, and one of the preeminent surveys of twentieth-century Native American art.

The successful candidate should possess a history of achievement, as well as a commitment to and familiarity with current principals of collections management.  This position is a member of the Executive staff and reports to the Director.

Requirements

The Director of Collections and Exhibitions must have a proclivity for teamwork, minimum of seven years of progressively responsible management experience, and a MA in art history, museum studies, or related field. Exceptional oral and written communication skills are essential.
