The Crow Collection of Asian Art seeks a curator to oversee the museum’s collections and exhibitions, perform a wide range of formal and informal teaching about Asian Art and culture, cultivate relationships with key partners and potential donors, and serve as a member of the Museum’s leadership team.

The Crow Collection of Asian Art curator reports to the Executive Director, and should enjoy a nimble, fast-paced, team-based, museum environment, with strong service goals that aim to integrate Asian art into the lives of the community.  Excellent communication skills, oral and written, and passion for sharing knowledge and experience are requisite.

 

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will oversee a collection of more than 800 Asian works of art dating from 2500 BCE to the present from China, Japan, South and South East Asia, Korea, and the Himalayas.

The curator will have responsibilities for care, cataloguing, display, and expansion  of the collection, organizing and overseeing exhibitions, conducting research, publication, and public outreach.

The successful candidate will be dynamic, academically qualified, collegial, and committed to spearheading an ambitious program of activities serving the Museum’s multiple local and national audiences.

The curator will undertake a wide range of both informal and formal teaching, including university-level instruction, as appropriate. The curator will apply for adjunct faculty status in an appropriate university department, and will actively seek out opportunities to offer or support object-based courses in Asian art, as appropriate.  The curator  is expected to serve as a resource to staff as well as the public.

The curator must be able to draw on a national and international network of specialists in Asian art (scholars, curators, collectors, philanthropists, dealers) to support the Crow Collection’s mission.

The curator will have the opportunity to research and teach in collaboration with the newly installed Edith O’Donnell Institute for Art History at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Essential Duties:

  • Overall management of the collections, curatorial, and exhibitions department staff and contract workers
  • Responsibility for the museum collections, including study, care, display, record keeping, publication, and provenance research
  • Build and refine the collections and collaborate with collectors, patrons, curatorial colleagues, and cultural organizations to generate important exhibitions, publications, and public programs
  • Cultivate funding for acquisitions, exhibitions, research grants, and fellowships through association with professional organizations, foundations, and patrons on regional, national, and international levels
  • Prepare and give lectures, tours, and workshops to the public, professional colleagues, and other groups
  • Maintain professional affiliations in scholarly organizations, professional societies, and relevant committees
  • Participate in institutional planning and budgeting process
  • Work collaboratively with educators and designers in the development, creation, interpretation, and installation of permanent galleries and special exhibitions organized or booked by the museum

Job Qualifications:
• Wide and deep knowledge of Asian art, with a focus on specific aspect(s)
• Passionate interest in Asian art, culture, history, religions, and traditions
• Strong international network of professional colleagues, collectors, dealers, and artists; must be willing to travel
• Substantial record of exhibitions and publications, and strong fund raising and public speaking abilities
• Proficiency in a relevant Asian language or languages

Education or Formal Training:
• MA or MFA required
• PhD preferred

Experience:
• Five or more years as a curator, or equivalent professional experience
• Experience in museum installations and managing local, national, and international collaborations
