Curator – Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University

The Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University seeks a Curator who will serve as a creative partner to the Director and Deputy Director during a historic period of ambitious growth. Reporting to the Museum Director, the Curator will play a key role in planning exhibitions and interpreting the Museum’s exceptional collection of post-war art, undertake significant research, and evaluate potential acquisitions. The Curator engages the campus community and identifies interdepartmental, regional, national, and international partnerships to create innovative programs that support and expand the museum’s roles as an educational resource for the University, a center for community engagement, and a cultural hub for the city of Boston. The Curator works closely with the Director and Director of Development to identify funds for exhibitions and acquisitions. This position will be held by an individual with a MA, preferably in Art History with a post-war emphasis, who will have both curatorial and teaching experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the development and presentation of exhibitions and projects that support a vision that will expand awareness of contemporary art and its

significance, and that strengthen teaching, student learning and cross-disciplinary exchange.

  • Conduct original research, negotiate with artists and lending institutions and supervise installations.
  • Research and recommend potential acquisitions; considers, solicits and submits possible gifts.
  • Write for exhibition publications and interpretative materials for a variety of audiences.
  • Work with the Development Department to identify funding sources and contribute content for exhibition-related grant applications.
  • Plan academic events and partners with the Museum’s Academic Liaison to develop programs that will support faculty, student and visitor engagement.
  • Contribute to team-taught courses; lead trainings, presentations and tours. Conduct audience research and evaluation.
  • Participate in strategic planning for Museum expansion and general operations.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be a pragmatic organizer and team player with a proven intellectual and publication record, and excellent knowledge of contemporary art. His/her interests should be broad but grounded in a vision of contemporary art in active dialogue with current issues faced by our society. He/she will hold a post-graduate degree in Art History, preferably with a post-war emphasis. A minimum of 3 years’ experience in programming and management in a contemporary art organization, museum or public gallery is preferred. The candidate must be able to demonstrate a clear vision of their own curatorial practice.
