Gallery Supervisor

Description:

Overview:  The Gallery Supervisor focuses on improving access to museum and educational resources and/or information via a gallery workforce—Visitor Assistants (VAs) and VA Leads, while ensuring the safety of the artwork and visitors.  The Supervisor ensures that VAs enforce museum policies and procedures at all times and stay abreast of exhibition and institution-related information. The Gallery Supervisor also manages the professional development of gallery personnel— Visitor Assistants (VAs) and VA Leads.  Leads meetings with gallery staff, assesses and enhances performance and professionalism of Visitor Assistant staff.

Qualifications:

  • Managerial experience required (minimum: 2 years); previous experience handling and resolving performance issues.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Knowledge of contemporary art is highly desired
  • Ability to remain calm and present a professional demeanor; exceptional customer service skills
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment by carrying out established policies and procedures for security and safety of people, artwork and facilities in a  complete, consistent and timely manner
  • Some experience in a position requiring protective, safety and/or security work is a plus
  • Experience working in a fast paced museum environment a plus
  • Working knowledge of  iPads, Wikis and Microsoft Office—Excel and Outlook—a  plus
  • Ability to adhere to ICA policies and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and some holidays
  • Ability to lift at least 40 pounds and remain standing and alert for long periods
