Production Supervisor

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks qualified candidates for the position of Production Supervisor. Reporting to the Exhibition Manager, the Production Supervisor is responsible for the production and maintenance of permanent and temporary exhibitions in alignment with aesthetic standards, museum goals, schedules and budgets.

Job Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and actively participate in all aspects of exhibition production, preparation, and installation. Oversee fabrication, installation, maintenance, and de-installation of temporary and permanent exhibitions; coordinate schedule of preparators; assist museum staff and temporary crews as needed to achieve goals.
  • Work with the Museum Director, Exhibition Manager, curators, preparators, and registrars to develop and implement exhibition production and installations within accepted standards of museum practice. Ensure that design and project scope stay on schedule and within budget.
  • With Exhibition Manager, propose and manage exhibition budgets for labor, materials, fabrication, construction, and graphics; plan, circulate, and implement detailed production schedules for each exhibition cycle, communicating with key personnel and coordinating meetings as needed; work with designers to produce exhibition plans, layouts, and elevations.
  • Work collaboratively to anticipate potential problems, develop contingency plans, and resolve issues effectively as they arise.
  • Supervise preparators, temporary crews, and outside vendors; communicate clearly with designers and fabricators; establish goals, priorities, schedules, and high standards for job performance; motivate excellent performance and collaboration; provide regular feedback.
  • Hire, train, and supervise freelance technicians for all related needs, including preparation, packing and shipping, gallery construction, and exhibition installation and lighting. Maintain collection storage areas and oversee safety training, practices, and maintenance for all workshop and storage areas. Maintain relationships with and secure bids for outside services.
  • Supervise and assist with all construction necessary for maintenance of collections or installation of exhibitions.
  • Establish and maintain excellent relationships and communication across the Skirball departments as well as with outside contractors and consultants; ensure that exhibition design and maintenance meet visitor experience goals.

Qualifications:  

  • A minimum of five years of experience in exhibition preparation and production, with a minimum of three years supervising projects and/or staff
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; design, architecture, or related field preferred
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in preparation, installation, and handling of art and artifacts in a museum, cultural institution, or gallery setting
  • Exceptional organizational, communications, and problem-solving skills; ability to use sound time management to meet deadlines while working on multiple projects
  • Excellent team leadership, delegation, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office programs; proficiency in AutoCAD, Vectorworks preferred
