Job Description

Responsible for the advancement of the Museum’s Ethnology, Archaeology, Library and Archival collections, and direct supervision of staff charged with managing those collections. In conjunction with the foregoing managers, develops long range plans and strategies that: meet the Museum’s mission, strengthen its financial and organizational foundation, and build community relationships.

Establishes and maintains initiatives that support the Museum goals and mission. In consultation with division collection managers and researchers, oversees and supports the presentation and curation of the Cultural Resource Division’s collections through exhibits, displays and diverse public programming. Maintains regular and consistent communication with administrative leadership to ensure Museum-wide integration of programs and activities.  Recommends direction and action, where necessary. Assists in compliance with all NAGPRA matters affecting the Museum.

Develops, implements and manages the Cultural Resources’ fiscal budget. Researches divisional grant and other funding opportunities, drafts grant proposals and administers grants and funds as appropriate. Directly supports fundraising efforts including but not limited to making presentations, providing tours, and attending community events and museum conferences to represent the Museum.

Provides direction to ensure the success of the division’s commitments and priorities. Collaborates with other Museum staff to develop new programs, projects, services and products. Provides advice to the Vice President & General Counsel on matters regarding the Museum’s cultural resources. Encourages staff professionalism, promotes teamwork and uses resources and creativity to develop solutions to Museum issues and concerns. Assists in developing policies and procedures that will ensure conformance to established standards and implements best practices for the Museum.

Actively seeks, cultivates and maintains local, national and international relationships that support and further the Museum’s strategic objectives. Interacts with external professional colleagues and community leaders to generate support for the Museum. Maintains and promotes the Museum’s image and reputation, and develops and protects the organization’s brand and intellectual property.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff, budgets and schedules.
  • Collection management or curatorial experience.
  • Demonstrated history of project collaboration with diverse community resources, including government, nonprofit and commercial entities and individuals.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience in a capacity related to the essential job responsibilities.

Education

Advanced degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, Hawaiian Studies, Pacific Island Studies or a related field of study.

  • Creative and analytical ability; good communication and listening skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work with diverse groups of people and interact at all levels; demonstrated ability to direct and supervise staff.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks/projects, meet deadlines and maintain composure under time constraints.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Technologically proficient across a variety of platforms and applications.
  • Valid driver’s license and must have own vehicle.
