The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia is currently seeking an energetic and creative individual for the position of Early Childhood Educator.  The Southern Museum, located 22 miles north of downtown Atlanta, is part of the prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations Program and includes Civil War and railroad exhibitions, an early 20th century locomotive factory, a Research Center (opening before close of 2015), and the Jolley Education Center. The Early Childhood Educator is a member of the Museum Visitors Services Team and coordinates all programs for early childhood learners and their families.  This position reports to the Director of Operations and will primarily work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule (although schedule may change based on museum program needs).

Primary responsibilities include creating, promoting, and conducting educational and public programs to interpret museum themes and exhibits for early learners, including preschool children, elementary students, and family audiences.  Key assignments involve implementing Mommy & Me (an early childhood program for children aged three to five years) and Homeschool Days; plus providing tours to a variety of school and adult groups.  The Early Childhood Educator is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the interactive exhibits in the Jolley Education Center together with suggestions for new components and activities.  The incumbent will develop supplemental web learning materials for access by teachers and families and plan in-service programs for early childhood educators and teachers.  The Early Childhood Educator will also participate in a wide range of museum activities and events including working ticket and sales operations of the front desk and museum gift shop.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, museum education, art, or related field along with a minimum of three years of paid professional experience educating young children.  Experience working in a museum setting is a plus.  This is a city government position with a starting salary of $35,000 to $38,000 and excellent benefits.  Candidates may be eligible for partial relocation expenses.
