Job Description

The Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers. Provides leadership, direction, and coordination for the museum’s department of education and interpretation.  Responsible for research, development, planning, implementation, administration, and evaluation of all non-academic educational programs for students, faculty, staff, and members of neighboring communities. Ensures that programs complement and supplement works of art in the permanent collection and in temporary exhibitions. Plays a significant role in the planning, development, and installation of exhibitions and their accompanying scholarly and interpretive publications.  Oversees and evaluates all museum-based public and private K through 12 school programs; oversees the training, scheduling, and evaluation of docents and other tour guides; implements the research, writing, and distribution of resource materials for educators; and supervises the department’s presence, schedules, and content on the museum’s website. Prepares, monitors, manages, and evaluates the department’s budget. The position supervises a staff of two full-time employees, a varying number of part-time employees and department volunteers; and oversees the museum’s intern program. Considerable high-level donor contact.

Job Requirements

Master’s degree in art history (Ph.D. preferred), fine arts or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Also requires a minimum of three years museum experience at the senior level in a museum’s curatorial or education department with a measurable level of achievement of institutional goals.  The successful candidate will possess knowledge of and enthusiasm about wide variety of visual arts over various historical periods; the ability to communicate the museum’s mission with passion and sensitivity; an intense desire to share this passion for art with others; excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to present information in a variety of formats to a variety of audiences; and computer literacy in current computer programs and social media platforms.
