Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Manages and coordinates the museum’s K-12 educator initiatives. Strategically innovates and implements digital programs and resources for K-12 audiences. Innovates teacher participation and engagement with museum.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Contributes to the design and implementation of a robust and innovative K-12 portfolio of programs
  • Co-develops, implements, and assesses the Prism.K12 initiative.
  • Manages all aspects of teacher programs including regional Evenings for Educators, and professional development for teachers both on- and off-site, including initial brainstorming, programming, and coordination of events.
  • Co-develops and manages creation of educational and teacher resources in print and digital formats, including resources forPrism.K12 website, social media, and in-gallery guides for educator programs.
  • Manages relationships with K-12 educators locally, regionally, nationally, and globally, including via social media (Twitter, Pinterest).
  • Serves as executive assistant to the Director of Education.
  • Collaborates on in-gallery and online visitor engagement strategies, with strong interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Collaborates interdepartmentally to research, develop, implement, publicize, and market K-12 programs.
  • Collaborates interdepartmentally to work on museum-wide initiatives.
  • Collaborates on Education Department initiatives when relevant, including assistance with museum’s commitment to Art Education DC (Washington, DC’s chapter of the National Art Education Association).
  • Collaborates with Development staff including grant writing and reporting for K-12 programs.
  • Maintains, synthesizes, and applies current knowledge and research on museum education theory and practice; researches exhibitions and the permanent collection when relevant to K-12 engagement.
  • Advocates for Phillips programs and initiatives through online presentations, local, national, and global trainings, workshops, and conferences including periodic travel.
  • Hires and supervises contracted vendors, educators, and designers; manages relationships with contractors.
  • Co-manages the department’s Education Assistant; manages interns.
  • Creates and maintains organizational systems for teacher programs, including mailing lists, budgets, financial records, program statistics/reports, and database management.
  • Conducts and coordinates evaluation research related to principal functions.
  • Provides departmental administrative support as needed.

Job Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.A. in Art History, Museum Education or related field.
  • Three to five years full-time museum experience.
  • Ability to work effectively on teams as collaborator or leader.
  • Excellent organization skills, follow-though, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated management experience, including proven success supervising staff.
  • Prior experience managing relationships.
  • Familiarity with new technologies in K-12 education, including website management (CMS) and social media.
