Job Description – Assistant Curator

Assistant Curator, Long Island Museum.  FT, 30 hours per week, with benefits.  The Assistant Curator will provide help in the formulation, research, and curation of exhibitions and other in-depth creative projects for the museums’ Art, History, and Carriage Collections.  Working with the museum’s Director of Collections and Interpretation (Chief Curator), the Assistant Curator will also work in the management and oversight of the museum’s diverse collections, with a role in building, refining, and caring for these assets.  Additional responsibilities will involve the preparation of grant requests and budgets.  The Assistant Curator will also function in an administrative role for the Curatorial Department, fielding research requests, facilitating financial transactions, and handling other day-to-day administrative concerns.

An AAM-accredited institution and a Smithsonian Affiliate, the Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriage’s mission is to “inspire understanding and appreciation of America’s multifaceted social and cultural heritage, with emphasis on Long Island and its people.”

The museum cares for a permanent collection of close to 50,000 artifacts.  Several areas of the museum’s collection, notably its works by genre painter William Sidney Mount (1807-1868) and its comprehensive holding of horse-drawn vehicles, are world-renowned.  The museum also maintains an outstanding selection of Long Island and New York State artists, ranging in date from the early nineteenth century to the contemporary era.  The history collection includes historic buildings, an important collection of North American bird decoys, miniature rooms, decorative arts, and more than 10,000 textiles and accessories.

Job Requirements

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in art history, history, or a related field, with specialization in American art and/or cultural history preferred
  • Strong and proven research, writing, and organizational skills
  • 2+ years prior museum or art gallery experience, with experience in changing exhibitions
  • Working knowledge of museum and preservation practices, and experience with collection management
  • Proven ability to work independently and with a team, manage multiple simultaneous projects, and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite and experience with collection management systems software such as Past Perfect, preferred
