Job Description

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (the de Young and Legion of Honor) are seeking a Senior Development Officer, Foundation and Government Giving. Under the direction of the Director of Development, the Senior Development Officer, Foundation and Government Giving is responsible for researching, identifying, and soliciting foundations and governmental agencies to fund general operations, exhibitions, education, conservation, and other museum programs. In addition, the successful candidate must be capable of stewarding these relationships to support the mission and needs of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Actively develops a strong and comprehensive grants program (foundations and government agencies).
  2. Identifies, researches, cultivates, and solicits/supports solicitation of new major foundation and governmental agency prospects. Stewards relationships; maintains and expands professional contacts with foundation and government agencies and grant-making offices. Oversees grant renewals.
  3. Writes effective grant and sponsorship proposals and develops cultivation strategies by collaborating with Curators, Finance, and other critical staff; coordinates appropriate follow-up and tracking systems for such proposals and reports.
  4. Compiles and generates fact sheets on Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco programs, project budgets, and collateral materials for use with proposals. Responds to inquiries with thorough and comprehensive information.
  5. Manages all grant administration among various museum departments, including timely and regular in-house and external reporting. Writes copy as required for development materials, such as newsletters, brochures and Fine Arts magazine.
  6. Oversees staff who assist with the research and coordination of grants and proposals.
  7. Works with Director of Museums and Trustee Committees as needed on projects such as exhibition proposals and re-accreditation applications.
  8. Attends all relevant museum events such as Development recognition and cultivation events, Business Council events, and civic affair events. Makes necessary contacts to develop excellent working relationships with foundation and corporate grant makers.

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are the city’s largest public arts institutions and comprise the de Young and the Legion of Honor museums. The de Young, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and located in Golden Gate Park, showcases American art from the 17th through the 21st centuries, international contemporary art, textiles and costumes, and art from the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa. The Legion of Honor displays a collection of over 4,000 years of ancient and European art including Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker and houses the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts in a Beaux-Arts style building overlooking Lincoln Park and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Job Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s Degree.

Work Experience: Five years experience of successful grant writing, budgeting, program/financial reporting, pipeline management, and forecasting for organizations of comparable or larger size.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent writing skills essential.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Some supervision experience.
  • Must be extremely organized and detail-oriented, with ability to maintain schedules and timelines.
  • Ability to effectively interact with a wide variety of personalities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Experience researching, analyzing, and organizing information into appropriate and effective formats for proposal and project use.
  • MS Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and Salesforce database systems a plus.
  • Familiarity with Bay Area funding community.
