Job Description

The Des Moines Art Center is a world-class museum in the heart of the Midwest. With a focus on contemporary art, it has amassed an important collection exhibited in three major buildings, on the grounds, and downtown in the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park. In addition, the Art Center presents thought-provoking exhibitions, educational programs and hands-on studio art classes.

The Des Moines Art Center is seeking a dynamic Curator who is a leader in the field to head its curatorial department. This opportunity includes developing and implementing temporary exhibitions; overseeing the care, management, and development of the permanent collection; providing leadership and guidance to staff; and managing the department budget.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Researching and curating timely and appropriate exhibitions in accordance with the Des Moines Art Center mission
  • Creating and writing exhibition-related publications
  • Researching and identifying collecting priorities while seeking new artwork for acquisition
  • Presenting gallery talks and lectures
  • Developing and managing yearly budgets for the curatorial department and exhibitions

Applicant should display professionalism in interacting with diverse audiences, colleagues, constituents, consultants, artists, trustees, docents, volunteers and museum visitors. Applicant must be able to develop, manage, and track budgets; possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; and strong oral and written communication skills.

Job Requirements

Required qualifications include a master’s degree in art history, and/or curatorial studies, with a minimum five years’ experience. Management experience is highly preferred.
