ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE CURATOR

Northern Baroque Paintings

 

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s finest museums, seeks an Assistant/Associate Curator, Northern Baroque Paintings to be a full-time member of the curatorial team of the Department of European Paintings. Should have a solid background in 17th century Dutch and Flemish painting—key strengths in the Museum’s collection—as well as an interest in in German and British art. He/she will be responsible for performing all curatorial duties, including: researching, studying, and publishing works in the collection under his/her curatorial responsibility; working with members of the conservation department; recommending acquisitions to complement the existing collection; proposing future exhibitions and publications; and maintaining positive and fruitful relations with colleagues in the museum and academic world, with dealers and auctioneers, and with Museum trustees and other supporters. The ideal candidate will be a published scholar familiar with the literature of European Baroque painting, passionately interested in connoisseurship and in improving the European Painting Department’s collection through gift and purchase, and committed to the Museum’s mission of public education.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES:

  • Contribute to the organization of permanent gallery exhibits and long-term loans including research, label writing and database maintenance
  • Research and oversee publication of works in the collection under his/her curatorial responsibility
  • Respond to correspondence relating to the collection and assist the public and visiting scholars
  • Participate in the Museum’s public education and outreach programs
  • Actively cultivate potential sponsors, including departmental support groups
  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout the Museum
  • Foster and maintain good working relationships with donors, trustees, and colleagues from other institutions in the U.S. and abroad, with the scholarly community, dealers, collectors, and other individuals involved with the interests of the Museum
  • Other related duties

Job Requirements

REQUIREMENTS and QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum three to five years curatorial experience in a museum or academic institution
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement and experience in accomplishing original research on European Paintings of the Northern Baroque period
  • Commitment to scholarship of the highest order
  • Ability to work closely with the Paintings Conservation Department
  • Ability to work closely with all staff within the Department and with colleagues throughout the Museum

Knowledge and Education:

  • Ph.D. in art history with a specialization in Northern Baroque painting
