Position Description: Executive Director, Texas Association of Museums

The Texas Association of Museums seeks a creative and dynamic professional to lead one of the largest state museum membership associations in the country. The Executive Director will combine day-to-day management skills with innovative thinking that inspires and leads the membership of the association. The Executive Director (ED) serves as the primary spokesperson for the association and must be knowledgeable of professional standards, national trends, and current challenges and opportunities faced by the membership. This position, which reports to an active governing council of museum professionals, is responsible for the success of the association.  The ED must be an effective manager of the association’s membership services, including a well-attended annual meeting, regional workshops, and statewide newsletter. As a leader of the field, the ED must have the ability to work collaboratively and represent TAM to museums, corporations, state agencies, universities, foundations, and state, regional, and national museum associations.

TAM strengthens our museum community by serving the many museum professionals who depend on TAM for the latest in training, best practices, standards, continuing education, and networking. For over 40 years our members have relied on TAM as a resource for ground-breaking information from the field and as a champion for demonstrating the public value of museums. TAM programming, particularly the TAM Annual Meeting, invigorates members to rise to higher levels of accomplishment. Through our members, TAM hopes to engage, educate, and thrill the citizens of Texas, while conducting operations that are transparent and accountable to those they serve.

Specific position responsibilities for the ED include:

  1. Annual Meeting
    1. The ED must successfully plan and implement the association’s annual meeting. Duties include coordinating all logistics of the meeting, marketing, and determining content of all programming.
  2. Membership
    1. The ED increases the membership base of the association through the addition of individual, institutional and business members.
    2. The ED develops programming and implements membership services.
  3. Fundraising
    1. The ED strengthens existing relationships with foundations, corporations, and individuals to raise revenue for the association.
    2. The ED serves as the development officer of the association and obtains financial support for operations and programs from corporations, foundations, and individuals.
  4. Public Relations
    1. The ED serves as the primary spokesperson for the association and must be an outstanding communicator.
    2. The ED coordinates all written and verbal communications from the association, including monthly email newsletters.
  5. Operations
    1. The ED is the administrator of the association. This includes presenting an annual budget to the council, implementing the budget, and working with the council in the regular review, updating and implementing the association’s long-range plan. It also includes working with public and private agencies, and attending council and committee meetings.
    2. The ED manages day-to-day operations of the association’s office, including staff supervision and accounting.
    3. The ED plans and arranges council meetings.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelors degree is required.

Experience: Minimum of five years of relevant full-time experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and shape the association’s direction.
  • Strong knowledge of the museum community.
  • A track record for innovative leadership.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with TAM Council and membership.
  • Excellent oral and written skills for effective internal and external communications.
  • Ability to think outside the box, generate ideas, and shape the association’s vision.
  • Superior organizational skills.
  • Proven track record of collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to work with autonomy while taking direction from TAM Council.
