Job Description

The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts seeks applications for an Assistant Curator for Family and Youth Programs. S/he will be part of the Museum Education team, reporting to the Director of Museum Education. Responsible for activities, materials and programs designed to serve family and youth audiences, s/he will be a leader in promoting the value arts education opportunities offered by the KIA with pre-K-12 school community and other organizations serving youth and families and an advocate for the value of arts education programming within the museum.

Job Requirements

The Assistant Curator for Family and Youth Programs will have proven leadership skills along with public speaking skills and experience developing a diverse audience of parents, educators, volunteers, staff and other constituencies. Effective project management, organizational, teaching, writing, and research skills are necessary along with a sound knowledge of art history and current trends in classroom and museum teaching strategies. S/he should have an aptitude for detail and ability to work both independently as well as in a team setting to creatively develop and implement programs and materials. A bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Art History, Museum Studies or Fine/Studio Art and experience as a teacher and/or administrator is required; a Master’s degree is preferred. Familiarity and training in the Visual Thinking Strategies methodology highly desired. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Access database) and social media is required.
