Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
The CJM seeks an Associate Curator to join the Exhibitions Department led by the Chief Curator.  This group works together to produce exhibitions that engage the newest ideas about the Jewish experience and contemporary art.  The CJM generates original shows and schedules traveling shows from other institutions. The Associate Curator will be responsible for organizing traveling exhibitions presented by The CJM, acting as a liaison with lenders and working with the curatorial team and other museum departments to plan exhibitions. S/he will also generate occasional original exhibitions. The Associate Curator may be assigned special projects including content development for public programs and events to complement exhibitions.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Liaise with the public, donors, lenders, artists, dealers, guest curators, other institutions and staff on exhibitions planning, interpretive programming around exhibitions, and fundraising efforts
  • Develop original exhibition proposals and curate exhibitions
  • Supervise traveling exhibitions
  • Initiate and confirm loans and shipments of art in coordination with the Registrar
  • Collaborate with designer to develop exhibition design,  graphics, and assist in production of brochures, newsletters and  catalogs
  • Speak publicly about exhibitions and write essays, blogs, and wall texts
  • Assist with installation including the preparation and production of exhibition labels
  • Perform research on artists, periods, styles, specific works, location of works, and photograph sources
  • Prepare exhibition checklists with thumbnails
  • Review unsolicited artist submissions with curatorial team
  • Assist in monitoring departmental expenses and budget management

 

 

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate degree in Art History, Curatorial, Jewish, or Museum Studies
  • At least three years of contemporary art museum/cultural history museum curatorial experience
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture and history and intellectual curiosity to continue to learn more
  • Strong interpersonal skills and poise in presentations to Trustees, donors and public
  • Mature understanding of a museum’s responsibility to serve the public and its communities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and editorial expertise
  • Highly organized with strong time management and problem-solving skills
  • Extremely responsible and detail-oriented
  • Works well in cross-departmental teams, flexible and good-humored
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, MAC and PC platforms
