Job Description

The Deputy Director for Human Resources (DDHRVCS) will lead Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ (VMFA’s) and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ Foundation (VMFAF’s) talent, cultural, and human capital strategies, volunteer and community service programs  He/she will report to the Director and work collaboratively with other executive team members, interfacing with VMFA’s Trustee and Foundation Boards, as appropriate. The individual will direct the VMFA’s human resources department and functions and provide VMFA and VMFAF with an organizational development perspective that delivers best in class talent management and employee engagement solutions to drive overall organizational success. The individual will also direct volunteer recruitment, development and training programs in support of the Museum activities and act as liaison with community organizations and volunteer groups.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will have executive-level HR leadership experience including setting strategy to support organizational growth and change; experience as head of HR for a 400+ employee organization; proven effectiveness leading enterprise-wide change efforts; and a demonstrated experience developing HR processes and approaches that have resulted in organizational success.  A BS/BA degree from an accredited college/university and a Master’s degree in Business, HR, or Organizational Development is preferred. Certification as PHR or SPHR is also preferred.  Additionally, he/she will possess these key qualifications:

  • Proven ability to think strategically and tactically as needed; evaluating and implementing appropriate, user-friendly and organization required HR related programs and initiatives.
  • Able to constantly focus on larger strategic vision while maintaining a willingness to work hands-on with all HR functions, especially employee relations matters.
  • Demonstrated competence in working with a variety of employees and leadership levels, to build appropriate consensus around HR strategy and tactics.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing effective talent management and leadership development processes and programs.
  • Proven ability to attract outstanding talent and employee engagement.
  • Able to motivate high performance teams.

  • Is regarded as credible and trustworthy in other HR leadership roles with a track record of creating and working as a team member. Possesses superior interpersonal communication and presentation skills

  • Demonstrates a passion for VMFA’s mission, volunteerism and community service
  • Successfully pass a background security check
