SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Animal Keeper, Fish specialist is primarily concerned with providing a high quality visitor experience through practicing and maintaining high professional standards for the husbandry, exhibition and educational use of the live animal collection. She/he is responsible for the daily care of the fish collection as well as assisting in the care of the entire live animal collection. The Animal Keeper, fish specialist, assists in the training and evaluating interns and volunteers assigned the LACC as well as Museum staff and volunteers wishing to use the collection in their educational programs and activities. She/he develops wildlife and natural history interpretations and programs and presents these on a regular basis. In the absence of the curators may become responsible for the daily operation of the LACC.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides care for the fresh water fish collection, estimated at 150 native and tropical fresh water fish.
  • Maintains all fresh water life support systems, performs all required water tests for 4 fresh water aquariums ranging from 30 to 600 gallons in size.
  • Assists in the care of the non-fish living collection which is a diverse collection of amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates comprised of 140 animals representing 50 species.
  • Assists in providing approximately 1000 animal handling and use training sessions for staff and volunteers
  • Assists with the general cleaning and maintenance of the LACC, life support and fish holding rooms, and seven live animal exhibit areas within the Museum.
  • Shares the responsibility of monitoring approximately 4000 animal appearances in the Museum’s educational activities.
  • Shares the responsibility of mentoring approximately 100 animal care interns on a yearly basis.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This position is temporary, full-time, 35 hours/week, five days a week, with one weekend day included. The duration of this position is one (1) year, with a possibility of an extension.

Senior Curator, Living Collections

Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) years or more of experience in animal care and exhibition with an emphasis on freshwater fish husbandry in an Aquarium, Zoo, Science Museum or Nature Center.
  • Bachelors of Science or Arts degree preferred.
  • Working knowledge and experience cleaning and maintaining life support systems for freshwater fish and aquatic displays.
  • Experience performing water quality testing for freshwater displays and maintaining accurate records for those tests.
  • Ability to create and maintain enriching animal environments.
  • Demonstrated ability working with the public in a very busy setting. ,
  • Demonstrated public speaking ability both one on one or with small to large groups of visitors.

STARTING SALARY:

Non-Exempt (Hourly). Commensurate with experience.
