Description

The Asian Art Museum offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual, with strong administrative, research, and language skills, to support a dynamic and prominent Japanese Art department.

Reporting to the Curator of Japanese Art, the Curatorial Assistant, Japanese Art provides curatorial assistance and administrative support in programs and projects related to the Japanese Art department, including research, cataloging, acquisition, conservation, education, exhibition, registration, and publication. The nature of the work requires maximum flexibility, resourcefulness, and initiative in addition to excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

Note: This position will be part-time, with a schedule of three days a week for a total of 20-24 hours per week.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Assist with the maintenance and documentation of the departmental collection; assists in the classification, description, and interpretation of artworks; conducts research for identifying and interpreting the objects; writes interpretative and informational labels, brochures and other related materials as required; assists in the research and preparation for grants; updates and organizes files.
  • Assist in planning, developing and organizing exhibitions and gallery rotations; assists in supervising the preparation and installation of artworks; coordinates administrative details of exhibitions and rotations as required.
  • Respond to request for information about objects; answers correspondence related to Japanese art; prepares and maintains operational records of departmental activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree, or working towards advanced degree, in Japanese Art History.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational, planning, research, and presentation skills; good administrative skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and good judgment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers, and donors.
  • Ability to physically handle delicate and irreplaceable objects of art with extreme care.
  • Computer proficiency; knowledge of MS Office preferred.
  • Detail-oriented, meticulous, and conscientious in following through on assigned tasks.
  • Knowledge of Japanese language and culture.

COMPENSATION

$21.00-$25.22 per hour.
