Description

The Gamble Curator at the Autry Museum of the American West is responsible for the interpretation and development of collections, exhibitions, publications, core galleries, and programs that explore the Twentieth-Century American West and popular culture, especially as related to the Western genre in film, literature, television, and music.

The Gamble Curator is also responsible for significant collections of historical firearms at the Autry and the on-going development of donor, collector, and trustee relationships to enhance and interpret the collection. The position is an excellent opportunity for an early or mid-career curator to represent the museum as a scholar and public figure.

Responsibilities

Development of exhibitions, publications, and permanent installations relative to significant issues in western history and popular culture and its impact on a regional, national, and international level.

Leading interdepartmental exhibition project teams through each phase of development for both in-house produced exhibitions and packaged shows.

Active public engagement and outreach in areas of specialization and collection responsibilities.

Research related to exhibitions and collections.

Development of collecting agendas of the museum, the identification of works for purchase and donation, and over-all collection development.

Deliver lectures and presentations, creating new scholarship for both museum and outside venues and publications.

Foster relationships, connections, and a collaborative spirit with other local and national institutions and cultural and community organizations.

Requirements

Completed MA or PhD in a relevant field such as American Studies, History, or Museum Studies is required

Knowledge and experience in at least two of the following areas: Western History, Twentieth-Century U.S. History, Popular Culture, firearms, decorative arts, material culture,  Film Studies,  American Studies, or Museum Studies

Demonstrated experience and record of conceptualizing, researching, and planning exhibitions

Preferable 2-5 years curatorial experience working within a museum setting

Interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to exhibition development

Record of scholarly and popular publications
