The National Museum of American History is looking for an enthusiastic educator with experience in early childhood education to join our team as an Education Specialist. The education specialist would lead workshops and programming primarily for children ages 0-6 and their parents and caregivers, both within and outside of the museum.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leading literacy-based activities for children ages 3-5 at the museum and in DC’s Ward 7 as part of a collaboration between the Smithsonian and the DC Promise Neighborhood Initiative.
  • Developing and implementing literacy- and object-based activities for children in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and grade 1 in the museum.
  • Facilitating activities in Wegmans Wonderplace, a new hands-on learning gallery for children ages 0-6 and their adult companions.
  • Helping to open, operate, and close Wonderplace according to operating procedures, performing routine maintenance and cleaning of activities.
  • Contributing to online resources for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classrooms.
  • Developing and leading workshops for parents and educators, with a focus on Pre-K and Kindergarten.

The position is located in the Office of Education and Public Engagement, Department of Education & Outreach. The schedule for this position will include one regular weekend day, as well as some evenings and holidays. Candidate must be willing to travel locally.

The best qualified applicants will have demonstrated experience working with children ages 0-6, an interest in American history and public service, familiarity with museums and/or museum-based programs for children, strong communication and organizational skills, and a commitment to customer service. Bachelor’s degree in education, history, or related field required.
