The Thomas & Katherine Detre Library & Archives at the Senator John Heinz History Center is a nationally important repository for archives of industrial America and a source for research about Western Pennsylvania.  Founded in 1879, the Library & Archives preserves the rich history of Western Pennsylvania, and makes its collections accessible to researchers, students, and the general public.

Job Posting

The Senator John Heinz History Center, the largest history museum in Pennsylvania and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, is seeking a full-time Librarian for the Thomas & Katherine Detre Library & Archives.  The Librarian is responsible for maintaining exceptional patron reference and reproduction services and administering, planning, organizing and managing all aspects of the information management policies and procedures of the Detre Library and Archives in accordance with SAA and ALA best practices. This includes professional reference services (reference desk, emails, letters, telephone inquiries, and genealogy research), bibliographic instruction (primary and secondary sources, finding aids, on-line catalog), collection development (acquisition and cataloging of books, serials, and special collection finding aids) preservation management, preparing and monitoring statistics, and budget allocation.  The Librarian also serves as the Records Manager for all formats of the information assets of the Heinz History Center.  The Librarian is also responsible for supervising interns, and volunteers whose projects involve scanning, photocopying and routine administration of secondary sources.

This is a full-time, Department Head position reporting to the Director of Library & Archives.

Requirements

Requirements 

The ideal candidate will have a Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) and 5 years of professional library and cataloging experience. The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of the current methods, policies, practices, principles and procedures of professional library work including database management, records management best practices, and digital curation.  1-2 years of supervisory experience is also required.  General knowledge of the Western Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh area is preferred.

Additional skills of the successful candidate will include proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, strong organizational and accuracy skills, system planning skills, excellent communication / interpersonal skills, and internet / database searching skills.
