The Stark Museum of Art is offering a six-month internship in the Education Department. The internship is full time paid and includes group medical insurance after waiting period.  Intern will assist with education programs and events at the Stark Museum of Art, under the supervision of the Curator of Education.

The Stark Museum of Art houses one of the nation’s most significant collections of American Western Art and is a program of the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation.  The Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation is a nonprofit corporation that operates exclusively for charitable and educational purposes.  The Foundation carries on its legacy with the programs of Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, The W.H. Stark House, the Stark Museum of Art, the Lutcher Theater, and the Miriam Lutcher Stark Contest in Reading and Declamation, as well as through support of charitable program and organizations in and around Southeast Texas that focus on education, health care, social needs, community enhancement, and arts and culture.  For more information about our organization:  www.starkmuseum.org

Schedule:  Regular hours will be Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., with some evening, weekend, and early morning hours as needed.  Must be able to commit to the entire time period: January 4, 2016 through July 1, 2016.

Duties: 

  • Develops object-based art lesson plans and teaches art to students in grades Pre-K through 12th through the onsite and offsite school initiatives at the museum.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of public programming, including Third Thursdays, Exhibition Celebrations, and SMA Playdate.
  • Assists with the development of self-guided interpretation, including cell phone audio tours, mobile application content, and Gallery Scavenger Hunts.
  • Manages art supplies, maintains classroom spaces and gallery Education Areas.
  • Works in conjunction with the Collections and Exhibitions Manager of The W.H. Stark House to maintain events in the collections management system
  • Assists with visitor research, including processing evaluation results and interviewing visitors.
  • Assists Education Department in other duties, including adult programs, as assigned.
  • Develop a professional portfolio documenting internship experience.

Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree from a college/university in Studio Art, Art Education, Art History, Museum Studies, or related field.
  • Teaching experience – experience working with children such as afterschool care or camp counseling acceptable
  • Studio art experience
  • Museum experience desired – volunteer or internship experience acceptable
