Description

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s finest museums, seeks a Senior Associate for Archival Processing position in the Department of Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel.  Under the direction of the Archivist, the Senior Associate for Archival Processing will be responsible for arranging, describing and cataloging the archives of the collector of Japanese art Mary Griggs Burke (1916-2012), held by the Asian Art department. Incumbent will prepare a detailed processing plan; perform background research on Mary Griggs Burke; arrange, re-house, and describe the records; create a detailed online finding aid and catalog record; draft a collection announcement; and seek out additional methods for advertising availability of the archive to the public. This is an 18-month position, with anticipated start-date mid-January 2016.

This full-time position has an end date of July 31, 2017.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Prepare processing/arrangement plan.
  • Process materials and arrange records to file-level and re-house records in archival folders.
  • Enter folder titles and other collection metadata into Archivists’ Toolkit database.
  • Generate, proofread, and edit finding aid and catalogue record
  • Load archival finding aid and catalogue record to the Museum’s website.
  • Write announcement of the availability of the archive for distribution to art history, museum studies, and archival list-servs and blogs.

Requirements and Qualifications:

Experience and Skills:

  • 1-3 years of professional experience processing archives, personal papers or manuscripts.
  • Succesfully demonstrated experience creating archival finding aids utilizing Archivists Toolkit.
  • Successfully demonstrated experience applying processing and descriptive standards including DACS, EAD and MARC-XML.
  • Basic knowledge of the preservation and conservation practices for historical records.
  • Strong writing and historical research skills.

Knowledge and Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science, Information Science, Art History or History/Archival Management, with coursework or equivalent experience in archival processing.
  • Knowledge of Japanese art history and Japanese language skills preferred.
