This newly-created position within the Program department of the Westchester-based Katonah Museum of Art focuses on introducing stimulating public engagement programs that connect art to broad cultural themes and compelling topics for today’s audiences. Collaborating closely with the Associate Curator of Programs curators and, in particular,both staff and volunteer educators whom s/he supervises,  the Associate Curator of Public Engagement will take the lead on developing and implementing dynamic programs that range from traditional art history courses to social experiments in the gallery space that might function as a classroom, laboratory or studio space. Armed with a deep knowledge of twentieth and twenty-first century art, the Associate Curator of Public Engagement will bring dynamic thinkers, creators and experts to the community. Exploring how art crosses over into other disciplines, this vital member of the staff e Associate Curator will be a connector and relationship-builder who seizes upon both national and local talent to energize the program and campus of the KMA. An extroverted personality who is comfortable taking charge and moving projects from inception to completion, the successful candidate must also be a good listener, attuned to the vibe and needs of area stakeholders, including college students, docents, staff and Board. As the organization nears the completion of a strategic planning process that places renewed emphasis on its public spaces and animating a hillside campus, the Associate Curator of Public Engagement will play an essential role in creating and carrying out impactful programs that could have the added benefit of generating revenue for the organization at an exciting moment in its evolution.

 

Curatorial Duties

  • Develops and implements creative engagement programming lineup taking place on and offsite, including but not limited to salon-style evenings, lectures, outdoor performances, and screenings
  • Works closely with Associate Curator of Programs focusing on artistic program to identify and manage projects and commissions for campus
  • Brings strong network of colleagues as guest speakers, residents, and partners
  • Collaborates closely with Development in leveraging cultivation opportunities
  • Networks out to organizations in the area for invigorated partnerships that will infuse program with robust ideas and new audiences
  • Strategizes and contributes content for website that expands footfall of program
  • Explores feasibility of residency program for artists and educators
  • Conducts research in the field and maintains robust presence for self and institution

Administrative Duties

  • Oversees general operation, including budget, for educational initiatives and three associated staff
  • Works closely with Director to ensure fulfillment of assigned strategic initiatives
  • Examines and evaluates all museum-based K-12 school program
  • Partners with Communications and Social Media Specialist to market and publicize events online and in print
  • Provides general guidance and thoughtful stimulation to staff and colleagues
  • Explores fundraising opportunities as related to area of supervision
Requirements
  • Minimum M.A. degree in area such as art history, fine art, humanities, education or communication
  • 3-5 years experience working in museums, art schools, cultural organizations, or relevant commercial settings
  • Demonstrated management and administrative abilities
  • Understanding of current developments and innovations in museum education
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills; proven ability to work with a range of colleagues
  • Passionate interest in the role of art in civic and community life
  • Willingness to be flexible when job requires nighttime hours for relevant events
