GENERAL SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the design of technology-based media that fulfill the DIA’s mission of helping visitors find personal meaning in art. A major initial project will be co-managing the development of the DIA’s new mobile tour utilizing beacon technology. The ideal candidate will have a background combining digital design expertise and creative museum engagement strategies.

The digital experience designer reports to the Vice President of Learning & Interpretation (L&I) and contributes to the division by managing digital projects developed with L&I colleagues responsible for exhibition interpretive plans and education programs. This necessitates close work the Director of Information Systems and active participation in development of the museum’s overall digital strategy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Co-manage, with the Director of Information Systems, the development of a new beacon aware mobile experience for visitors which will replace the museum’s permanent collection audio tour; funding is in place and a contractor engaged, but the project has not yet begun
  • Actively participate in a cross-functional team developing the DIA’s digital strategy
  • Work with the Vice President of Learning & Interpretation and the Directors of Education Programs and Interpretive Engagement to identify, manage, and design technology engagements that support school programs and exhibitions, within capacity and budgets
  • Design mood boards, storyboards, interactive content, layouts and site grids based on interpretive plans for select education programs and exhibitions
  • Create user interface design concepts (wireframes),  demos and all required artifacts for a developer to complete the build
  • Contribute positively to a team-based work culture
Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors or Masters in Interaction Design, New Media Design or related design field required
  • Proven experience leading the design, architecting and optimizing of websites and/or applications especially in a museum or educational setting
  • Experience using popular user experience design tools
  • Understanding of the ways people use technology to satisfy their curiosity, enhance learning, and for broad educational purposes
  • Intellectual curiosity about art and its interdisciplinary connections
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational, conceptual and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently, with peers and in cross-functional teams
