University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks a Curator in the Office of the President. Reporting to the Director, the Curator is responsible for developing and managing the Arts Program’s collections and programs.

This position will require the ability to work long hours, some nights and weekends for exhibit openings, receptions and special projects.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Coordinate exhibit design, planning, production, and installation including working with visual artists and raising funds to support the projects.
  • Catalog and care for the current museum items and new acquisitions according to established methods and practices including overseeing database for museum collections.
  • Researches and compiles materials for inclusion in the Arts Program’s archives and for the use in exhibit programs and publications.
  • Builds the collections for the museum through gift and purchases and direct research to support collection acquisitions.
  • Supervises the Facility Technician/Registrar and work with various departments at the university to achieve program goals and objectives planning and coordinating exhibition programs.
  • Assists the Director in administering museum activities.
  • Acquires museum items, by purchase or donations, to develop and ensure collection growth in the museum; researches and writes history and descriptions of collection items to properly represent the artworks.
  • Develops and implements a conservation program to preserve the collections.
  • Selects and develops visual art exhibitions in conjunction with the director and directs and coordinates special educational activities.
  • Analyzes and recommends museum needs to the Director.
  • Participates in policy and procedure development.
  • Reviews financial information to project needs, prepares budget for director’s approval, and monitors expenditures.
  • Writes essays for the exhibition catalogs and newsletter.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in Museum Studies, Art History or related field required. The successful candidate must have four (4) to six (6) years of experience working in an art gallery or museum or related field. Knowledge of national, state, and local art, artists, and art history; museum policies, practices and procedures; multiple cultural groups to build a culturally diverse collection. The successful candidate must also have the ability to develop educational outreach programs to all ages; attract new audiences and audience participation; work well with others in a small environment; communicate effectively; to perform accessing and cataloging activities of museum materials. Must also have knowledge of cataloguing software (PastPerfect) for museums; ability to develop and implement conservation and preservation plans for the art collection; maintain records, prepare reports, and conduct correspondence; secure financial contributions for the institution; coordinate and plan traveling exhibitions. Must also be able to perform collections management duties, including ensuring proper storage of artifacts during and after the formal acquisition process. Must have the ability to lift at least 50 pounds; to edit materials and articulate exhibit concepts and designs; and to work with artists, prospective donors, and others.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning is preferred. Certificate in Archival Management, Collections Management, Business Management, etc. Knowledge of Asian Art/Chinese Art.
