Executive Director

Description:
The Forbes House Museum, a Milton, MA landmark since 1833, is seeking a new executive director as it prepares for transformational changes in its physical plant and community programming. The board is seeking a visionary leader inspired by the story of the Forbes family and its courageous engagement with the issues, challenges, and adventures of their times. Working with the board, the executive director will develop a new strategic plan that focuses on preservation and restoration of our physical facilities; conservation and interpretation of our collection to new audiences in Milton and beyond; and the development of relevant and exciting programming for contemporary audiences.

Key to the success of these endeavors will be a vitalized fundraising program, focused on both annual operations and major gifts to support phased renovation of the main museum building, and eventually, redevelopment of outbuildings not in current use. We are looking for someone whose talents and ambitions are a match for this extraordinary cultural and historic resource.

Five to ten years of progressive responsibility in leading a non-profit organization/program or a fund-raising program in a non-profit organization is required. Experience leading and supporting a volunteer board is highly desirable. Experience in or familiarity with museum operations and protocols is also a plus, but more important is the intellectual capacity to learn and absorb the mission and history of the Forbes museum and to write and speak about it with the power to enlist friends old and new in support of our work. Cultivation of donor prospects, soliciting them for gifts, and stewarding these relationships are at the heart of this role.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Plan and manage the annual operating budget.

2. Create, implement, and deliver results on the annual fundraising plan.

3. Develop the annual programming plan.

4. Manage and maintain the museum’s collections, including cataloging the holdings.

5. Serve as FHM’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.

6. Supervise and collaborate with organization staff, including the current Assistant to the Director.

7. Together with the board, create and implement a new strategic plan for the museum.

8. Help plan and support board and committee meetings.

9. Oversee marketing, web and social media presence, and other communications efforts.

10. Review, approve and oversee contracts for services.

11. Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
