Haub Curator of Western American Art

Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) seeks an energetic and collaborative curator to research and present TAM’s Haub Family Collection of Western American Art and related works. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in American art history and will join a dynamic and collaborative curatorial team. The Haub Curator of Western American Art has primary responsibilities for the newly opened Haub Family Galleries, designed by Olson Kundig Architects.

 

The curator will be expected to interpret western American art through a diverse range of art historical contexts. The curator will be conversant with recent scholarship that seeks to expand understanding of American art through a variety of diverse viewpoints and cultural contexts. The curator will demonstrate a working knowledge of the broad history of American art from the colonial era to the present including the history of photography.

 

The Haub Curator will play a leading role in developing collection-based exhibitions, and plan and develop nationally and internationally touring special exhibitions. The Haub Curator will be expected to produce scholarly publications and represent TAM at national and regional conferences and professional gatherings.

 

Other duties involve maintaining and initiating sustainable partnerships with other related arts organizations and universities in the Pacific Northwest. The curator will also develop and strengthen relationships with TAM trustees and patrons as well as with regional and national western art collectors and specialists. The curator will also supervise Haub Fellows in collaboration with the Director of Education on special projects.

 

This position reports to the Executive Director with additional work direction provided by the Chief Curator and collaborative efforts with the Curator of Collections and Special Exhibitions and Director of Education.

Requirements

Master’s degree in art history or a related field required, with a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible curatorial experience.

Strong knowledge of Western American Art.

Ability to design creative and innovate ways of interpreting the artwork on view.

Significant experience with collection development, project direction, donor cultivation and budget;

Experience collaborating with key constituents to build strong relationships. Ability to collaborate openly and respectfully with a flexible and collegial team. Evidence of strong working relationships with artists, curators, scholars, collectors and journalists.

Strong communication skills (written, oral, visual);

A deep connection and commitment to public access and audience engagement.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite;

Familiarity with TMS collections management software.
