Description

The Anchorage Museum is seeking an individual experienced in providing exceptional leadership with the ability to further the mission of the Museum as a full-time Director of Learning and Engagement. This position is tasked with initiating and managing the museum’s innovative learning opportunities for K-12 and online for the full-time position of Director of Learning and Engagement. This dynamic position will oversee and coordinate the area of educational programming, initiate and supervise broad initiatives in support of excellence and equity, set priorities, develop budgets, establish policies, create museum learning initiatives, and set long-range strategic goal.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide innovative participatory learning opportunities for diverse audiences of all ages, from toddler to adult.
  • Lead, supervise, and mentor the Learning and Engagement team, who oversee volunteers and training, and who conduct art, science, history and culture instruction and creative learning opportunities.
  • Oversee the delivery of programs for adult, teen, family, toddler, college and K-12 (student and teacher) audience and under-served communities,
  • Expand the Museum’s digital learning and engagement offerings, creating digital learning modules for use by educators and others.
  • Lead L&E staff in the museum’s current initiatives to deepen relationships with the community and to better attract and serve.
  • With others, author funding proposals to support audience development, museum education, outreach, and library services
  • Promote and further the Museum’s strategic goals.
  • Serve as liaison to multiple departments and stakeholders and advise the docent and internship programs.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:  

  • Master’s degree in art history, education, museum administration, museum education, fine art, history, museum studies, or related discipline required.
  • Five or more years of museum leadership experience, including developing and planning programs, supervising staff and volunteers, and initiating and managing multiple community projects.
  • Strong team player with experience working collaboratively on interpretive projects, evaluation studies, and major renovations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Active record of professional leadership roles, presentations, and publications.
  • Demonstrate a passion for excellence and equity.
  • Strong leadership and vision, management and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to conceptualize, create and implement innovative projects and partnerships.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of art history, current museum teaching strategies and learning theory, and extensive public speaking experience.
  • Strong sense of teamwork and community.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of museum education in lifelong learning, 21st century skill-building and visual literacy.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the value and role of a museum in the greater community.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the growing role of technology in museum education, outreach and interpretation, and its limitations.
  • Demonstrate a passion for excellence and equity.
  • Strong leadership, vision, management and mentoring skills.
