Position Title: Director of Education

Position Description: Job Brief: The Smithtown Historical Society is looking for a dynamic individual to lead their Education Department. The Director of Education works side by side with the education staff to develop programming and events which encourage students, families, and individuals to explore their history in new and engaging ways. The Director must be a highly motivated and flexible individual who enjoys tackling new projects and believes in keeping current programs relevant. A cooperative and collaborative individual would be the best fit for this position as he or she will work closely with the other executive staff to achieve the mission and goals of the Smithtown Historical Society.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Executive Director to plan events and programs best suited to reach out to the community
  • Oversee day to day operations of the Education Department such as field trips, outreach programs, summer camp, and seasonal weekend and school break programs
  • Supervise part-time staff, several consultants, and volunteers in the offering of educational programming
  • Evaluate current programming to develop strategies to ensure its continued success and relevance while developing new community offerings
  • Manage the supplies and resources needed to offer programming by researching, ordering, and obtaining these materials in a timely fashion
  • Assist in greeting and problem solving with all visitors to address their needs at the Society
  • Organizing the spending of Education Department funds in a way that offers the best programs possible within the Society budget
  • Establish and sustain relationships with new and existing vendors and community partners to coordinate resources for quality programming
  • Assess education staff performance and provide feedback through periodic evaluations
  • Manage and develop public program offerings including but not limited to Final Fridaymembership events, scout programs, birthday parties
  • Market education programs, public programs and special events
  • Ensure that the Education Department contributes to the Society’s mission of preserving, restoring, and interpreting Long Island’s heritage for the education and enjoyment of the public

Requirements:

  • Experience as an Education Director or other museum education position
  • Demonstrated success in leadership and organization
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Passion for history with varied experience in the museum field or historic house settings
  • Working knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Past Perfect and Google Docs
  • BA/BS in history, museum studies, anthropology, art, or art history required.

Salary: mid $30,000s
