Description

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is seeking to fill the position of Historian in the New York State Museum. The incumbent will be responsible for curatorial and collections management duties related to New York State Museum History Collections located at the collections facility in Rotterdam, New York.  Under the direct supervision of the Chief Curator, History, duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Curate and manage collections relative to New York State History;
  • Work with curators, historians, conservators, collections technicians, and administrators to curate and manage 80,000 square foot collections facility;
  • Assist in museum’s collections management program through registration program, project, and resource planning, and resource allocation;
  • Oversee and maintain environmental conditions in collections storage facility, take an active role in conditions assessment, manage physical storage needs, and complete inventory of the collections at regular intervals;
  • Assist Chief Curator and other program staff with exhibits, public programs, tours, researcher visit and other educational/research activities; and
  • Work with museum management and history staff to plan and implement movement of collections and staff to a new storage facility.
Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: For provisional appointment candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in History, American studies*, or Public History, and two years of professional experience in collections management and/or research OR a master’s degree in History, American Studies*, or Public History and one year of professional experience in collections management and/or research.

*Including or supplemented with nine semester credit hours in History


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a provisional appointment.  Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit.  Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits.

*Leads to a maximum salary of $66,494 based on annual performance advances.
