Description

ABOUT THE MORGAN:  The Morgan is a collection of collections assembled by some of the greatest connoisseurs of the past 125 years, and occupies a unique place among the world’s great institutions and in the cultural life of New York. A visit to the Morgan offers thrilling glimpses into the creative process. The Morgan hosted more than 200,000 visitors in FY 2016. This year, the Morgan celebrates the tenth anniversary of its most ambitious building project, a major, critically acclaimed 75,000 square-foot expansion designed by Renzo Piano.

The collection is built on a foundation of manuscripts, rare books, drawings, prints and other works of art acquired by financier Pierpont Morgan, with important contributions from many passionate collectors. Today, the Morgan has the finest collection of illuminated manuscripts in America, tens of thousands of rare books; a vast trove of correspondence, journals and working manuscripts by some of the world’s greatest writers, artists, composers and thinkers; one of the largest and most important collections of old master drawings in the U.S.; and superb holdings of ancient seals and tablets from the Near East.

FUNDING:  The Morgan has a current annual operating budget of approximately $20 million, of which $9 million is received from philanthropic support. An endowment campaign, currently in the silent phase, has secured commitments of $62 million toward a $100 million goal.
