New England Aquarium is poised for dramatic growth in reach and impact over the coming decade. We have completed a transformational renovation of our educational and engagement hub on Central Wharf in Boston, infusing our exhibits with insights from our global research and conservation programs. We inform and inspire millions of visitors each year through our exhibits and public outreach.

The Director of Project Management, Exhibits and Planning provides leadership for the planning, design and execution of elaborate Aquarium exhibits, renovations and major capital projects throughout our campus.  The Director establishes and directs project teams, builds consensus, manages deliverables and ensures exhibits are compelling, educational and align with our mission.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Leadership – Lead all phases of projects including the planning, design, development, installation, evaluation, and remedial adjustment phases for aquarium exhibits and major capital projects. Establish and direct project teams comprised of staff, consultants, vendors and contractors.  Build consensus on project goals, priorities, scope, budget, objectives, and schedule. Ensures exhibits are compelling, interactive and educational, drive attendance and align with Aquarium mission.  Manage annual operating budget.
  2. Accountability – Maintain accountability to department and project deliverables, budgets, and schedules. Responsible for assuring compliance with all state/federal regulations and project related grants, as applicable.
  3. Supervision/Management – Manage evaluation and selection of outside contractors, bid and permit processes.  Supervise work of staff, outside contractors, consultants and vendors. Regularly assess progress of project deliverables including inspection of construction to ensure works are consistent with planned schedule and documentation package.
  4. Problem Solving – Identify and resolve project-related issues, and make timely data-driven decisions. Escalate and/or seek help when needed.
  5. Communication – Ensure clear and timely communication and coordination with project team, internal stakeholders, and external consultants/contractors. Prepare meeting agendas, facilitate meetings, and ensure that meeting notes are taken and distributed. Build consensus, set coherent and achievable goals, ensure planned milestones are on track and communicate deviations and corrective measures, in a timely manner, where appropriate.
  6. Documentation – Oversee development of documentation packages for key phases (concept design, schematic design, design development, construction, and evaluation/debrief). Establish project protocols, work flow plans and project management tools to meet agreed upon goals and maintain productivity.
  7. Planning – Develop annual and multiyear plans for exhibits and major capital projects, including consideration of institutional priorities, sequencing and interdependencies. Actively participate in master planning for exhibits, facilities, and NEAq campus.
  8. Design – Provide oversight for design direction, review functions and recommendations to aquarium staff members and outside consultants for renovations, additions and changes to aquarium buildings, furnishings, works of art and exterior public spaces. In collaboration with other NEAq departments, ensure high quality of design for the aquarium’s animal and non-animal exhibits, including architectural elements, finishes, interpretive materials, habitats, lighting, interaction and audiovisual components.
  9. Excellence – Serve as an advocate for high quality design and architecture. Maintain high quality and professional standards, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Contribute to process improvements and best practices.
Requirements

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field with a minimum of 8 years of progressive project management experience required
  • Experience in an aquarium, zoo or museum setting preferred
  • Architecture/design background desirable
  • Project Management certification desirable
  • Experience in a non-profit, mission driven organization desirable

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven experience in project management principles and methodologies and tools (spreadsheets, design, planning and project management software)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Excellent team building and interpersonal skills; ability to assemble, motivate and lead collaborative teams
  • Project budgeting and monitoring
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with State and Federal building codes and related regulations i.e. ADA and OSHA (preferred)
  • Familiarity with MEP systems (preferred)
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Vectorworks, or similar drafting and modeling software (preferred).
