Founded in 1926 by a group of distinguished American and Chinese educators including John Dewey, Hu Shih, Paul Monroe and Dr. Kuo Ping-wen, the China Institute is the oldest bicultural organization in America devoted exclusively to China. It was chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York in 1944 as a school of continuing education in language and culture. Programs, activities, courses, and seminars are offered in the visual and performing arts, culture, history, music, philosophy, language and literature for the general public, children and teachers, and business.

Today the China Institute is a rapidly expanding and exciting organization under the leadership of its recently appointed president James Heimowitz. The Institute has built a $36-million facility, 52,000 square-feet in size, laid-out over two floors, including a 3,000-square-foot gallery, library, classrooms and offices in Lower Manhattan. It has more space for exhibitions, performances and classes to meet increasing demand and uphold its vision to heighten cultural impact.

The location of Lower Manhattan next to One World Trade Center allows the Institute to both inspire and be inspired by the newly revitalized and developing neighborhood. As the Institute adapts to the world around it, it has become a staple of the community—both New York and worldwide.

China Institute seeks a dynamic, creative, and accomplished Chief Development Officer (CDO). S/he will work closely with the President to further build philanthropic support for the Institute’s expanded vision. Increasing financial support from the present $3.4 million annually will enable the Institute to sustain its vision to create understanding and appreciation across cultures.

Reporting directly to the President, the CDO is a member of the China Institute’s senior management team. S/he must be able to create strong working relationships with the board members, members of the corporate program, and the program staff.

With a keen understanding of the Institute’s vision and programmatic needs, the succesful CDO will build a robust fundraising program to align with the organization’s strategic direction and goals. S/he must maintain a personal portfolio of high net worth individual prospects and manage a six-person development staff to cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations and government organizations. The CDO will also manage grant proposals, oversee fundraising events, and implement annual giving appeals.

The China Institute has retained Freeman Philanthropic Services, LLC to assist on this executive recruitment. Please send all confidential inquiries, applications, and nominations directly to FPS via e-mail at ChinaInstitute@glfreeman.com.
