DIGITAL COLLECTIONS SPECIALIST

Join us in inspiring exploration and understanding of the Universe!  The Adler Planetarium has an opportunity available for a Digital Collections Specialist. This individual will develop the trusted digital repository, create, follow, and maintain procedures and standards for metadata and preservation. This individual will also assist with collections management, object handling, and artifact movement.  The position requires object handling as it relates to digitization projects and collections management assistance.

The Adler Planetarium boasts one of the largest and most significant collections of historic scientific instruments in the world. The collections also include rare and modern books, works on paper, photography, paintings, models, and archives. The Adler’s Webster Institute is responsible for holding and maintaining these collections. This individual will be responsible for the Adler’s institutional archives and other archival collections, will administrate the Webster Institute’s library, and participate actively in the use and promotion of archival and library material in our public programs, special events, social media and digital projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement procedures and standards for metadata and long-term preservation of digital collections. Maintain database via the trusted digital repository.
  • Implement digitization projects, including scanning, quality control, image editing, and metadata creation.
  • Coordinate photography shoots for collections projects.
  • Supervise and organize access to the collections.
  • Assist with collections management, including daily environmental monitoring, participating in the presentation of public programs, assisting with exhibition installation/reinstallation, and movement of oversized or heavy objects.
  • Participate in digital access initiatives such as design and implementation of online public access catalog and maintenance of the Webster Institute Facebook page.

Education and Experience

  • BA or BS in History, Art History, Photography, Museum Studies, Library Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • Experience in digital curation/digital stewardship. Experience developing procedures and standards for digital material and digitization of collections.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize data and work with museum collections databases. Experience with scanners.
  • Must be proficient in the use of museum collections databases. Macintosh and Windows OS, Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Bridge and Photoshop), MS Office Suite, database software accessed locally and via the web, imaging software, scanner technology.
