Project Summary: The Education Division oversees programs for K-16 students and teachers from around the state, including outreach programs at schools. K-12 Programs and Services coordinates teacher professional development and develops curriculum materials to support educators’ instruction of history and the social studies. This Intern will coordinate social media efforts for the K-12 Programs and Services department. The major focus is on research, coordinating strategy for Twitter and Facebook, planning a calendar of posts, and updating social media on a regular basis. Other projects may include future planning and strategy for K-12 Programs and Services social media or developing plans for expanding into other social media outlets.

Student Responsibilities:

Social Media

  • Work with K-12 Programs and Services staff to design, develop, and implement social media plan
  • Develop content (photos, text, contests, etc.) for Twitter and Facebook
  • Research online tools, social media strategies, and make recommendations for the program
  • Attend weekly department meetings and monthly social media team meetings as appropriate

Projects

Potential projects include:

  • Keeping the Twitter feed updated and engaging
  • Research other similar institutions’ use of social media and make recommendations for other outlets
  • Oversee other projects as assigned

Knowledge intern is expected to gain:

  • Experience developing content and marketing materials for social media outlets
  • Project management experience
  • Knowledge of behind the scenes planning and implementation of education programs in a museum environment

Ideal degrees:   Social Media, History, Education, Management, Media Studies, Public Relations, Marketing, etc.

Student Qualifications:  Undergraduate junior or senior able to work well independently and in a team setting.  Experience planning, developing and implementing projects, conducting research, and building good working relationships with a diverse pool of people is required. Student must be detail-oriented, comfortable using social-media technologies, possess excellent communication skills, and be able to think creatively.  Experience with Microsoft Suite, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media outlets required. Ability to take quality photos is preferred. Interest in history and/or education is a plus.
