Description

The Garden’s Development department plays a key role in amassing the support required to carry out institutional initiatives. Under the leadership of the Head of Individual Giving, the Senior Individual Giving Officer will cultivate, solicit and close new major gifts ($50k+) for the Garden’s general operations, endowment, capital projects, and other programmatic purposes, such as Scientific Research and Plant Conservation, the LuEsther T. Mertz Library, Children’s Education, Exhibition Support, Capital Projects, and the Fund for the Garden.

This position operates in the context of a $25-35 million development program, and will be a key senior member of the campaign team for a $300 to $400 million comprehensive campaign expected to begin in 2016-17.  A large responsibility of this position is to build the bench of donors from whom we will seek multi-year campaign gifts.

The Senior Individual Giving Officer will make a measurable contribution to the donor pipeline by significantly increasing the number of new major donor prospects.  He/she will work collaboratively with the Head of Individual Giving and the Executive Vice President for External Relations to identify new prospects and develop strategies for cultivation, and to build and advance relationships with new donors and prospects in order to move them up the giving pipeline.  He/she will manage a portfolio of approximately 125 donor and prospect relationships, from cultivation through solicitation and stewardship; and close 5-10 new five and six-figure gifts per year.

He/she will make regular in-person visits and solicitations and coordinate visits to the Garden for exhibitions, children’s educational activities, and horticultural tours; write, edit and coordinate proposals, major solicitations, and stewardship reports; contribute to donor files and documentation; assist with efforts to raise funds for additional programmatic support and special projects; form productive relationships with NYBG staff to understand their programmatic activities and needs, and to help shape their thinking and priorities to comport with the Garden’s strategic plan; and assist with Development and/or Garden-wide events as needed.
