Description:
The Sargent House Museum in Gloucester is seeking interns for its 2016 Summer Intern Program. Gloucester and Cape Ann high school students and college students and are given first consideration, though others are also encouraged to apply. The internship begins immediately and runs through Labor Day (or earlier for students going back to school.) Interns are expected to give 5-10 hours per week on a flexible schedule to be arranged with museum staff. This is an unpaid internship. Hours can be used toward community service hours.

The Sargent House Museum is an 18th century historic house museum founded to engage the public in the life and times of Judith Sargent Murray (1751-1820), a Gloucester resident who was one of America’s first women writers and a pioneering advocate for women’s education and equality. The house holds an impressive collection of furniture, decorative arts, architecture and paintings from the 19th and 18th centuries, including works of world-renowned artist John Singer Sargent, a descendant of Judith Sargent Murray’s family. The museum and its gorgeous gardens and grounds are located in the center of downtown Gloucester.

Interns in our program can expect to learn about a fascinating period in America’s history and about the extraordinary contributions and life of Judith Sargent Murray. They will also learn the inner workings of a small historic house museum. Interns will meet with the museum staff during orientation to help them focus on an area of interest.
