Position Summary: In partnership with the Executive Director, the Board, the Curatorial Department, and other MIM departments, the European Curator will help build, interpret, and care for the MIM collection of approximately 15,000 musical instruments, music-related artifacts, and supporting documentation.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Augment and strengthen the European music collection by working to identify, evaluate, document, and acquire appropriate instruments and contextual objects for exhibits.
• Select, record, and/or coordinate video content used in European exhibits. Conduct research related to music and musical instruments that can be utilized in improving exhibits.
 Manage the Mechanical Music gallery.
• Identify potential sources for long-term loans and donations of musical instruments and work with MIM team members and Board to secure these loans and gifts.
• Write label copy, contribute to catalogs on the collection, and produce articles and other publications related to MIM’s mission and collection.
• Manage consultants who may work on specific exhibits within their area of specialty or be involved in the acquisition of instruments, AV, and other objects for MIM.
• Build relationships and partnerships with scholars, collectors, other museum curators, and other organizations.
• Plan and execute special exhibits and other projects to expand and enhance the guest experience.
• Contribute to educational and other public outreach activities for the MIM, including tours, workshops, lectures and classes.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate must bring energy, vision, enthusiasm, and resourcefulness to this position. An ability to work quickly and with good judgment is paramount. Exceptional organizational, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities and strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to multi-task, prioritize and self-manage are required. The ability to work collaboratively with the other talented team members at MIM is critical. Other essential qualifications include:
• Advanced degree in ethnomusicology, musicology, or other discipline related to music and musical instruments. Ph.D. a plus.
• Broad knowledge of and interest in musical instruments and music, with in-depth expertise in European music.
• Excellent writing and strong communication skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and excel in a high performance team culture.
• Demonstrated success in building relationships with diverse people, including musicians, musical instrument makers, and other cultural specialists, collectors, and other museum curators.
• Previous museum or collection management experience is desirable but not essential.
