DescriptionResponsible for the design, fabrication installation and maintenance of exhibitions and galleries with a concern for visitor experience that incorporates thoughtful ways to make exhibitions enjoyable and accessible for a wide range of ages, cultural backgrounds, physical abilities, etc.  Makes revisions in response to feedback, budget constraints, or unforeseen circumstances.  Prepares and works within approved budgets and timelines and responsible for schedule and resource planning.  Seeks project bids, and schedules and oversees exhibit installations  Works collaboratively with staff on exhibition planning.  Provides spatial analysis of gallery and museum spaces for exhibits; designs 3-D layouts of exhibits including mounts, case needs and construction; and designs and orders 2-D graphics such as object labels and wall panels for exhibitions.  Oversees staff and volunteers and participates in exhibit installations employing professional museum object handling procedures and other museum best practices.  Participates in collections care, handling, storage, and maintenance of objects and storage areas and also the packing and crating of loan objects.  Will pitch in to help the team serve the mission in areas outside the job description.  Committed to keeping up with and implementing museum best practices.  Performs other related duties as assigned.  May be required to work some weekends and holidays.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Office/Museum environment. requires operation of hand and power tools, climbing ladders, constructing exhibits outside, and lifting 50 lbs.

Requirements

EXPERIENCE-MINIMUM   REQUIREMENTS:

5+ years of   experience in a similar job capacity; or Bachelor’s Degree in art, graphic   design, architecture or closely related field.

2+ years’   experience designing 3-D interior layouts in a museum, theater, retail, or   similar environment.

Proficient abilities with 2-D design software including Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator

Some experience in   project management, overseeing budgets, working with vendors, and supervisory   experience

Preferred   experience with interpretive planning, exemplary project management, &   supervision.

Preferred 2+   years’ experience in exhibition development and construction, and 2+ years’   experience designing wall labels and wall panels for museum exhibitions.

ABILITIES-MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to design and implement innovative,   creative exhibition layouts.  Excellent   organizational, team-building, and communication skills.  Attentive to details.  Excellent spatial analysis and problem   solving skills.   Strong organization   and project management abilities; expertise in exhibition design,   fabrication, and installation.    Knowledge to design, calculate specifications, and make or order 3-D   components for exhibits; vets and works with vendors and contractors. Ability   to paint walls and casework; install objects, graphics, mounts, casework and   other furnishing and constructions; and able to adjust lighting.  Ability to climb ladder, lift 50 lbs., use   hand and power tools, and properly handle artifacts.  Prefer ability to come up with creative,   frugal solutions to exhibition design, preparation and installation.  Prefer knowledge of ADA standards, and   museum environmental standards and materials.    Prefer experience with interpretive planning; and Spanish language   abilities.
