The position is a Missouri State merit position with the Missouri State Museum.  Depending on the experience of the successful candidate, the position may be offered as either an Interpretive Resource Specialists (IRS) I or Interpretive Resource Specialist (IRS) II level.

Job Duties:

  • Research, develop and deliver interpretive programs responsive to the interests of the public, existing exhibits and the museum’s mission.
  • Deliver engaging tours of the Missouri State Capitol to school groups, organizations and individuals.
  • Develop and present inclusive programs for audiences of diverse abilities.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate interpretive programs for schools, and revise programs to keep them relevant to school curricula and teacher needs.
  • Actively seek new markets/opportunities for interpretive programs.
  • Schedule educational outreach programs with schools and organizations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local schools for outreach programs, partnerships and repeat school visits to museum.
  • Act as the liaison between educators and the museum.
  • Provide information on the museum, capitol tours, and the capitol at the Missouri State Museum tour desk.
  • Provide information on the history of Jefferson Landing Historic Site and interpret its exhibits.
  • Work register/point of sale system at the Missouri State Museum and Jefferson Landing State Historic Site gift shops.
  • Maintain and manage traveling trunks.
  • Maintain educational props.
  • Work collaboratively with exhibit staff to develop and maintain interactive exhibits.
  • Work with exhibit staff to set educational objectives for exhibitions and develop teachers’ guides and activities related to permanent and changing exhibits.
  • Support planning and implementation of public interpretive programs
  • Develop clear goals, expectations and measures that align with overall institution goals.
  • Create activities that enable multiple ways for a visitor to participate and engage in museum programming.
  • Contribute to the safety of museum staff and visitors by exercising good judgment, following safety procedures and alerting others of problems when necessary.
  • Excellent written, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Utilize computer software and other resources to create fliers and handouts for interpretive programs.
  •  Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to travel, occasionally overnight, to give outreach programs and attend meetings and conferences.
  • Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
