The Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship (MUCF) program is committed to creating a more diverse curatorial field by engaging young scholars of varied background and perspectives in year-round mentoring activities and intensive summer internships. The High Museum participates as one of five partnering museums nationally and supports a week long Summer Academy in curatorial work and four undergraduate fellows each year. The Mellon Graduate Fellowship Program in Object-Centered Curatorial Research offers students at the graduate level valuable opportunities for direct work with objects, informed thorough research and technical evaluation. Managed in partnership with Emory University’s Art History Department and the Michael C. Carlos Museum, the program has brought together students, faculty, curators, and conservators to consider questions of authorship, manufacture, presentation, and preservation and advanced scholarship on the museums’ collections. Resulting research is presented publically through lectures, installations and online technologies.

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Andrew W. Mellon Program Coordinator for Curatorial Fellowships will act as the program coordinator for graduate and undergraduate curatorial fellowship programs at the High Museum of Art.  The Coordinator will work in conjunction with key High Museum staff and museum affiliates towards the successful outcome of program initiatives. The Program Coordinator will work closely with key staff in the curatorial and education departments at the High, with a direct report to the Mellon Curatorial Programs Managing Curator. This position will also work collaboratively with the Head of Museum Interpretation and Digital Engagement in the facilitation and planning of Mellon-related activities. The Coordinator will be in regular communication with other relevant staff, including the Associate Director of Foundation and Government Relations with regards to all foundation reporting, budgeting and grant tracking.  This position is Grant Funded for 2 years with the potential for renewal.

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • This is a full-time position, approximately 40 hours/week
  • General business hours are Monday – Friday, 9am – 5 pm, with occasional evenings or weekends as necessary

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Coordinate all day-to-day aspects of the High Museum’s commitment to the Mellon Curatorial Fellowship Programs, including but not limited to organizing the recruitment of and selection process for potential fellows, providing administrative support, managing the on-boarding process and all scheduling for fellows, mentors, advisors and program affiliates
  • Assist with the development of and facilitate all programmatic activities that promote the objectives of the programs
  • Participate in developing strategies for and help to implement on-going assessment of the programs
  • Contribute to refining and revising the programs as necessary and in formulating proposals to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the continuation of these programs at the High
  • Manage annual grant reports of the programs in coordination with key staff
  • Provide a first line of support for fellows during their time at the High, acting as a mentor and providing guidance to fellows
  • Work as a liaison between fellows and High staff, curatorial mentors, resources, and educational and institutional partners
  • Cultivate and maintain a network of contacts and advisors from local universities, schools, and community arts organizations as well as with institutional partners
  • Act as an ambassador within the Atlanta and regional communities and nationally for the museum and the Mellon fellowship programs
  • Cultivate awareness of and engagement in the Mellon fellowship programs within the High and Woodruff Arts Center communities
  • Other duties as necessary

For the MUCF Program:

  • The Coordinator will to organize recruitment strategies for fellows.
  • Develop and maintain a network of academic affiliations
  • Participate in designing, organizing, and implementing a week-long Summer Academy to identify potential fellowship recipients
  • Develop a menu of year-round mentoring activities in coordination with participating curatorial departments
  • Assist in organizing and providing support for summer intensive internships in curatorial departments; act as a mentor and provide guidance to fellowship recipients; act as the primary point of contact with the program’s National Coordinator and affiliates

For the Mellon Graduate Fellowship Program in Object-Centered Curatorial Research:

  • The Coordinator will facilitate and coordinate activities of the graduate fellows.
  • Maintain routine contact with key staff at the collaborating institutions, Emory University and the Carlos Museum
  • Facilitate meetings and maintain administrative needs as necessary
  • Facilitate access to collections and research resources at the High for fellows
  • Develop public facing opportunities to present/publish object-based research by the fellows research in collaboration with the curatorial manager, the High’s interpretation team, and the technology team.

Education and Experience:

  • B.A. required, M.A. preferred in Art History, Arts Education, Curatorial Studies or a closely related field.
  • Experience working with individuals of diverse socio-economical & ethnic backgrounds highly preferred
  • Experience with Project Management
  • Experience managing a budget
  • Experience with community-based mentoring/teaching
  • Motivation and proven ability to work diplomatically with individuals of diverse backgrounds

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to pay attention to details while overseeing multifaceted projects
  • Excellent organizational, oral, public speaking and written skills
  • Self motivated and able to work independently
